“The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning develops the body uniformly, corrects posture, restores vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.” - Joseph H. Pilates
What is Classical Pilates
The Pilates Method is an equipment based body conditioning program, developed in the 1920s by Joseph H. Pilates. Originally called “Contrology,” Pilates developed this program in response to his observations about the negative impact of the modern lifestyle, which he blamed for bad posture and inefficient breathing patterns. His answer to these challenges was to create a unique series of life-enhancing physical exercises that are designed to use the whole body at all times and help correct postural balance.
Like many Eastern practices, the Pilates method trains the body as a way to condition the mind. “Look, you see it resists your movements in just the right way so those inner muscles really have to work against it,” Joseph Pilates said of the Pilates equipment. “That way you can concentrate on the movement. You must always do it slowly and smoothly. Then your whole body is in it.”
Classical Pilates exercises use corrective resistances on spring-loaded equipment and simple active stretches performed on mats. The exercises are performed with fluidity, using minimal repetition and minimal effort to yield improvements in centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow.
What are the Benefits of Classical Pilates
Classical Pilates works to bring the whole body into union through movement. Classical Pilates is best performed, at least two-to-three times per week, both at home and under well-certified instruction. After repeated practice it connects to you:
Your breath starts coordinating with your postural muscles
Your movement becomes controlled and flowing
You actively stretch and strengthen muscle, breaking down fascia
You create new neural pathways
You stimulate the lymphatic system
Doing Classical Pilates develops muscular endurance which means dancers can practice more, musicians can play longer, and athletes can move better. Everyone who practices Classical Pilates may experience relief in the symptoms caused by stress, trauma, accident, injury, and overuse.
